Place of origin |
Paludanus was a sculptor working in Antwerp between 1557 and 1579, mainly in alabaster.
The symbol of the horse leadping over the globe is that adopted by King Philip II of Spain to illustrate his motto 'NON SUFFICIT ORBIS' (The world is not enough), alluding to the extension of his empire into four continents. The horse leaping over the globe with this motto appears on his coinage issued in 1580 to commemorate the union of Spain and Portugal under the Spanish crown. Since Pauldanus died in the previous year this plaquette predates the first official use of the emblem on coinage. This plaque is the only bronze known by this artist.
