The practice of chewing the leaf of the Piper betel (pan) combined with areca nut, lime (chunam) and spices has long been widespread throughout India and South-East Asia. This silver betel-container (pandan) consists of five mango-shaped receptacles, each in two parts hinged together at one side. They radiate from a central projection topped with a domed rosette-knob and rest on four leaf-and-rosette legs.
