Emin Pasha, the Governor of Egyptian Sudan, was rescued from an uprising by a party led by the famous explorer Henry Morton Stanley. Five out of the nine Europeans died during the expedition. In commemoration, the Royal Geographical Society commissioned a medal. It was designed by a woman, which was unusual at that time.

Obv. bust portrait of Henry Morton Stanley and inscription 'H.M Stanley presented by the Royal Geographical Society MDCCCXC' Rev., a seated female figure emblematical of Africa holding two jars from which water is flowing, with her foot upon a crocodile; in the background are mountains and the sun setiing behind a forest; inscribed 'Congo Nile Rvwenzori 1887-1889.' Signed 'Elinor Hallé'
