This medal is from a ‘medallic history’ recording Napoleon’s greatest exploits. It copies an earlier medallic history of Louis XIV and so invites favourable comparisons between the two rulers. Napoleon is supported by figures representing the Senate and the people. Flanking them are an open book, with the word ‘Law’, and an ancient ploughshare. The legend in French, reads: ‘The senate and the people’; in the exergue ‘DENON DIR. JEUFFROY F.’
