Costume for the Hand of Fate pas de deux in George Balanchine's ballet Cotillon, de Basil Ballets Russes 1932, designed by Christian Berard. Black calf-length tutu with cotton velvet bodice and net skirt. The bodice is sleeveless and extends into a soft point at the centre front. Both the bodice and the full net skirt are decorated with appliquéd gold stars and crescent moons which have been machine stitched in place. The skirt is unlined, the interior of the bodice is boned and is lined with cream cotton. The dress fastens at the rear with a vertical row of metal hooks and eyes.
