Costume for the Spirit of the Lake in Clifford Mills and John Ramsay's Where the Rainbow Ends, designed by Philip Gough, Royal Festival Hall, 1954 worn by Alicia Markova.
Knee length dress, in tones of blue and green, with close fitting bodice and full skirt. The bodice is stiffened with metal boning and extends into a slight point at the centre front. The curved neckline is shaped to fit the bust and edged with a line of false pearls, further lines of diamente and pearl trimming run across the bust. A meandering group of green synthetic velvet leaves has been appliqued across the bodice and runs across the upper part of the sleeves. These sleeves are short and a formed from panels of synthetic or cotton net. Thin elastic straps run beneath these 'upper' sleeves to secure the dress in place. The bodice and skirt of the dress, which is formed from layers of tulle, are decorated with tear drop shaped sequins and cut glass gems. The dress fastens at the rear with a row of hooks and eyes and two woven maker's label stitched to the interior of the bodice read 'Mlle. Manya, London'.
