This costume for a female dancer in the Hungarian Dance in Swan Lake was originally designed by Alexandre Golovin for the Bolshoi production in 1901. It was purchased by Diaghilev for the Ballets Russes in 1911.
It consists of a short sleeved crimson velvet dress embroidered with a wandering gold motif, with additional fitted under sleeves, collar and centre panel in yellow and gold or silver floral brocade. The fitted sleeves and front panel have been overlaid with black tarlatan under a black lattice of linen/wool. The inner collar is carmine twill under gold tissue. The dress is unlined but there are vivid magenta tarlatan underskirts.
