Stud

350 BC-300 BC (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

A feature of Greek jewellery is the use of gold, solide or of hammered sheet metal, to form sculptural motifs with intricate geometric and floral ornaments. The filigree and granulation decoration on this ear stud are of particular delicacy. It shows the use of plain wires, concentric borders of ropes, beaded wires, and outer line of gold granules.
The fly in the centre, although ancient, may have been added later, probably in the workshop of Casteallani who owned the piece.
