Object history
The careful cutting and assembly of the 16th century damask suggests that it may originally have been a secular garment. This cope was formerly in the collection of the painter Attilio Simonetti, which was auctioned in Rome in 1883.
Historical context
Most of the compositions from Scenes from the Life of the Virgin are derived from Taddeo Gaddi's frescoes of 1332-8 at Santa Croce, and from similar sources and were current in Florentine-embroidery workshops over a long period; the present set dates from the late 14th/early 15th century.
Production
The Coronation of the Virgin, depicted on the hood, is mid-fifteenth century.
