The Sheffield Assay Office opened in 1773, the year this knife handle was hallmarked. Joseph Rodgers & Sons, who produced the blades, were prominent Sheffield cutlers during the first part of Queen Victoria's reign and were given a royal appointment. Sheffield was an ideal place to produce cutlery. Labour was abundant, raw materials were nearby, and it had six rivers to provide water power.
