Design by Jon Bannenberg for a drawing room at 3 Elm Walk

Pencil drawing of design for a drawing room at 3 Elm Street on a rectangular sheet of white paper. The design shows part of a room with a carpet on which are placed a four-seater corner sofa, a coffee table in the centre, two single-seater sofas and a chest-of-drawers with a large plant, lamp and photo frames on top. One of the walls behins the corner sofa has a large painting on it and a door that is shut. The adjacent wall has two floor-to-ceiling windows with blinds and a square frame positioned on the wall space between them.

This design was borrowed for The Way We Live Now exhibition in 1978-79 before being given as a gift to the museum by Jon Bannenberg alsong with another design E.1213-1979 aslo borrowed for the exhibition.

Fluid spatial and lighting effects were characteristic of Jon Bannenberg's work in the 1960s. He explored them through movable (often perforated) screens, roller blinds, and artificial lighting systems with dimming, filtering and spot-lighting devices.

This drawing shows an old chest-of-drawers used in one corner of the room along with a modern seating system. Bannenberg believed that antique and modern furniture were both showed to the greatest advantage when carefully combined.
