Darly’s aim was to disseminate the orders for artists working in different fields. Darly produced numerous prints like these, not only architectural but also showing vases and other smaller objects. Prints like these would have been used by artisans as an example from which to work.

Object history | Darly was a 'Professor of Ornament' and an engraver. His aim in this print and others in this case was to disseminate the orders to artists of all kinds, strongly emphasising their ornamental aspect. His illustrations are based on James Gibbs's Rules for Drawing the Several Parts of Architecture. Darly shows a simple unfluted Roman Doric - the 'ovolo or quarter round' of the capital is now normally called the echinus. |
