This type of ornament recalls the XVI th century mannerism style, with its anthropomorphic and metamorphic figures and animals shown amongst foliated. Here the richness and strong rhythm of the friezes, creating lively movement, reflect Baroque tendencies of the seventeenth century.

Polifilio Giancarli, after. Title plate. 1 of 10 plates from a suite of 12 copies entitled 'Divers Dessains de Frize Linuention d'Odouard Fiolete propre aux Peintre Scupteurs Menuisiers et autres'. The suite is a set of copies in reverse of grotesque friezes originally published by Odoardo Fialetti. Published by Jean Boisseau, Paris, 1646.
