Earthenware bowl with glaze detail, given by Ian McKellen to the designer, Michael Annals, as a first night present to mark the opening of the Prospect Theatre Company's production of Shakespeare's play, Hamlet, 1971. Ian McKellen played the title role and the production was directed by Robert Chetwyn. It open on 23 March 1971 at the Nottingham Playhouse and then toured in Britain and Europe.

Earthenware bowl with glaze detail, inscribed 'Hamlet'. Given by Ian McKellen to the designer, Michael Annals, as a first night present to mark the opening of William Shakespeare's play, Hamlet, Prospect Theatre Company, 1971.
Physical description
Earthenware bowl, the outer rim and interior glazed, the interior decorated with a face in profile and the word 'HAMLET / 71' in grey, the outer rim with incised chevron pattern. The base is stamped with a monogram 'NH' or 'HN'. A wire had been added to the foot with a loop for hanging.
