Print

Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The caricatures of Thomas Rowlandson (1756 -1827) give a vivid picture of 18th century life. This etching is not a cruel satire but a gently humorous impression of an audience's reactions to Romeo and Juliet. The young ladies clutch their handkerchiefs, a small child wipes away his tears, and the men and an older woman look glum. A companion piece, 'Comedy Spectators' (S.56-2008), shows an audience having a much jollier evening at the theatre.
