One of a series of drawings by Ethelbert White (1891-1972), showing work backstage in a London theatre during a performance. This was probably made during a season by Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. From 1919 to the mid-1920s White was commissioned by the author and publisher, Cyril Beaumont, to design souvenirs and illustrate the publications that he was producing.

Backstage drawing showing dancers going through the stage curtain to take their curtain call, probably Ethelbert White, ca.1919
Physical description
Backstage scene showing dancers taking their curtain call through the front curtain. Three stage-hands pull back the curtain while a dancer (possibly dressed as a coachman from the ballet Petrouchka in top hat, overcoat and boots) holds the gap open. A woman dressed in a tutu bends forward behind the curtain while a male dancer acknowledges the applause in front of it. A fifth man is crossing the stage.
