Gallery label
Jan de Beijer sketched views like this in the open air during the summer. Later he would work up the drawings in his studio. De Beijer specialised in topographical views of the Netherlands and Germany. He made numerous views of Amsterdam like this one, sometimes repeating the same scene several times with altered light effects to suggest different times of day.

C.E. Appleby (possibly 1835–90), London; from whom purchased with other pictures by the museum (L. Suppl. 153b), 1 June 1885 for £6. 10s. 0d.
