Place of origin

At centre is a brick-built, tiled-roof farmhouse with, on its gable end, an open window below a crane for hoisting furniture to the upper storey; beyond the farmhouse to the right is a hay barn, and to its left (behind the old oak tree) is a thatched and clapboard stable. At left a peasant carrying a barrel walks along a path from the farm towards a pair of herders with their dog in the centre foreground. The older herdsman, wearing a hat, is pointing into the distance and talking to a seated itinerant hawker with a covered basket of wares at his left. Flocks of cattle, sheep and goats move along the country road to the right, accompanied by another herder, in the direction of a horse-drawn cart coming towards them.
