Portrait miniature on vellum, possibly the poet and courtier, Sir Philip Sidney. The miniature is set in a 19th century brass frame. On the back of the frame is engraved "Sir Philip Sidney / By / Isaac Oliver". The Isaac Oliver monogram on the obverse is a later addition. Stylistically the miniature is close to works from the studio of Nicholas Hilliard.

Marks and inscriptions
'IO' (Basil Long noted in "Catalogue of the Jones Collection, Part III - Paintings and Miniatures", (HMSO, 1923), cat. 616, page 87. 1923, that 'The signature is probably spurious; it is painted with a different gold from the ear-rings and the border'. Recent examination of the miniature have confirmed that the signature is a later addition and is not original. )
