Portrait, head and shoulders, to right and looking to front; the sitter is wearing armour. Features boldly hatched in brown and sanguine with some blue-grey shadow, some gouache in the face and white lights in the eyes, on a thick cream carnation ground; hair in brown wash, densely hatched with darker colour and heightened with opaque lights; armour in grey wash with white lights and gold for the studs; collar in white over grey wash; plain dark brown background; on vellum put down on a leaf from a table-book.

Frame: Nineteenth-century copper-gilt rim of V-section holding a convex glass in a rebate; the back closed by a toothed copper strip; the hanger a small half-round ring.
