Anonymous Untitled fashion plate Paris, 1780s This plate illustrates a dandy striking a comely pose. The dandy was a stock male character found in many fashion illustrations and caricatures between 1780 and 1830. Coined in about 1780, the term referred to smartly dressed young men who deported themselves to display their fashionable clothes to best advantage.
