Bibliographic reference | The title given in the V&A Catalogue of Watercolour Paintings is 'A half-caste, wearing a striped turban and dress'. The use of the term half-caste was widely used until the late 20th century. However, it is now regarded as offensive by many people due to its origins within the Hindu Caste System, in which being half-caste (and therefore less than whole) could mean social exclusion for the individual concerned. Alternative terms to use in its place would be mixed parentage, multi-racial, or joint heritage. |
