Object history | John Varley (1778-1842) was a founder member of the Society of Painters in Water-Colours (SPWC). This watercolour of Beddgelert Bridge in Wales was one of Varley's most popular compositions, and it is unclear which version he exhibited at the SPWC's first exhibition in 1805. Varley exhibited 37 watercolours at this exhibition and became one of the leading landscape watercolourists of his generation. It is notable however that by 1809 critics condemned the dominance of landscape paintings at the SPWC's exhibitions. |
