Object history
Geoffrey, Count of Lusignan, was a twelfth century crusader and a member of the French Lusignan family originating in Poitou, western France. Many members of the family fought in the crusades; in addition, Geoffrey's brother Guy became King of Jerusalem just before its fall to the invading Muslim forces in 1187. Although not as famous as his brother, Geoffrey fought alongside him on several occasions, notably at the Battle of Arsuf in 1191. He was considered to be a favourite of Richard Coeur de Lion, who appointed him Governor of Jaffa.
