Paulson states that Hogarth's source of inspiration was the style developed by B.Picart and his engravers in Vol.1 of 'Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde...', edited by J.Bernard et al., 11 vols in 10, Amsterdam, 1723-43.
However, as Rodney Searight points out, the plate bears a close resemblance to 'Mariage Turc', Pl.100 in J.Le Hay's, ‘Recueil de Cent Estampes representant differentes Nations du Levant...’, Paris, 1714, where the plates are based on drawings by J.B.Van Mour.
Differences between the plates include the backgrounds, and a reversal of the procession. For a detailed analysis of the possible sources of Hogarth's print, see Searight Archive.
