December

Watercolour
c.1785 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Fashionably dressed woman sitting at a table beside a fireplace, in front of a window with the curtain drawn across it, but not enough to conceal a full moon outside. A cat is sleeping at her feet, and two candles in candlesticks, playing cards and a book are on the table under her arm. There is a vase of evergreens, possibly holly, on the mantlepiece, with red berries, and the woman is holding a pair of wick scissors in one hand and a tasselled bell-pull in the other, possibly about to summon a servant.
