Theatre Costume

1945
Artist/Maker

Irina Baronova identified this costume as 'Soleil de nuit' which she wore with Leonide Massine's Ballet Russe Highlights, Summer 1945, and the costume is certainly after the Larionov design for the Snow Maiden, in style if not decorative detail. However the solo does not appear among the divertissements listed on the Ballet Russes Highlights programmes - possibly the costume was, in fact, worn for the 'Russian Dance' (choreographed by Massine, music by Gliere) danced by Baronova with Lazowsky.
Baronova appeared with Massine's company only in the summer of 1945.

The costume may be compared with that created for the Snow Maiden for Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes S. 830-1918.
