Etching and stipple depicting Selim III, Emperor of the Turks. Lettered with title and 'European Magazine, Engraved by Ridley from an Original Painting in the Possession of Spencer Smith Esqr' and 'Published by J.Asperne, at the Bible, Crown & Constitution, Cornhill, 1 August, 1807'.

Descriptive line

Etching and stipple engraving by William Ridley depicting a portrait of Selim III, the late Emperor of the Turks. Plate from European Magazine, 1807, Vol. 52, facing p.3. British School, 1807.

Production Note

Despite the title, this portrait actually represents Selim III, who reigned 1789-1807. He introduced reforms in his army, but the Janissaries revolted against them, and were eventually responsible for his deposition.
