This shawl, possibly made in 1925 in Paris, shows red on white velvet appliqué and black on grey velvet appliqué. The abstract forms of the appliqué express the dynamism typical of modern art and decorative arts during the 1920s.

Appliqué on chiffon shawl, Paris, 1925
Physical description
Square shaped shawl of pale grey silk chiffon, finished with a long black silk fringe. Ground has bold abstract motifs applied in black, red and cream silk velvets gold lamé and mid-grey silk taffeta. The motifs vary but the black, gold and grey are angular with zig-zag outlines and the red, cream are curvilinear and resemble flames. The appliqué is hand-stitched to the chiffon ground.
