An affluent, stylish man might have owned two different types of evening outfits. Dinner suits were fashionable for informal occasions such as evening parties, the theatre and concerts. The white waistcoat and tails of formal evening dress were correct for dances, assemblies and public dinners. In 1923 a West End hotel reportedly turned away a man for wearing a dinner jacket to a dance.

Woollen three-piece dinner suit, made in Great Britain, 1928-1929.
Physical description
Black dinner suit consisting of a jacket, trousers and waistcoat of black wool. The inside of the jacket is lined with black silk, and the sleeves with striped cotton. The waistcoat and trousers are lined with the same cotton as the jacket.
