Marielle Baylis is a designer of interior textiles with a twist and an edge. She is very fond of knitted textiles within the home and attempts to push the boundaries of how these are perceived. Baylis made 'Bed of Roses' for her final degree show; inspired by the title 'Inside, Outside' it brought together Baylis' fascination of both the outdoors and nature, and the domestic interior. While 'Bed of Roses' was originally conceived as a product for the bathroom as a very individual bathmat due to its waterproof quality, Baylis has also worked with a lighting company to explore how the knitted roses could be manufactured as fairy lights. Baylis has also designed and made garden-inspired place mats, and knitted toparies and a hedge.

Physical description

Hand knitted (on machine) viscose wool base to which knitted roses have been attached. Long knitted lengths of wool are cut and overlocked in sections which are then individually rolled by hand to create the roses. The roses and knitted leaves are then attached to the base with latex and covered in a mixture of latex and dylon which is left to dry. Knitted leaves are attached with latex and patches of grass are hooked onto the base. The base is then cut to shape.

Object history note

Baylis designed and made 'Bed of Roses' during her Textile Design and Surface Decoration degree course at Buckingham Chilterns University College. Baylis explored the concept of adapting the roses for an interior lighting designer Hugh Khan) who was interested in creating knitted fairy lights. However problems regarding fire proofing and toxicity meant that the project did not take off. She was encouraged by Khan to exhibit 'Bed of Roses' at Decorex 2002. She also exhibited it at Birmingham NEC where a potential Russian buyer expressed interest in the idea of encapsulating the roses under glass for an external patio.
