Place of origin |
This election poster projects an affirmative image of the new democracy in Germany. The rising sun is a symbol of hope and the sower (derived from a painting by Vincent Van Gogh) promises regeneration after the First World War. The slogan represents the progressive but not radical agenda of the pro-republican German Democratic Party (locally called the German People's Party in Bavaria). The party's middle class appeal is reflected by the fairly traditional imagery. The poster presents change in terms of growth and gentle transformation - far removed from left wing depictions of the destruction of the existing order.

Gallery label | This election poster for the German Democratic Party shows the rising sun as a symbol of hope and the sower as an agent of regeneration. The image of change as growth and gentle transformation would have appealed to the party’s middle class following. It is far removed from left-wing calls for the destruction of the existing order.
