Place of origin |
This small carving of a goose could have functioned as a toggle to a scholar's fan. The goose was an oblique reference to the great calligrapher Wang Xizhi (AD 303-361). He reputedly spent long hours observing how a goose moved its neck and subsequently realised that he could produce superb calligraphy by moving his wrist in a similar manner.
