Before the development of direct colour photography in the 20th century, colour images were made by carefully hand-painting monochrome photographs. Williamson’s technique of meticulously hand-colouring photographs of decorative objects was particularly suited to reproducing brightly coloured pieces, including this Rococo-style clock from the Museum’s collection.
