'Upper part of buffet, carved walnut, with decoration, inlaid in boxwood, bog-oak & other woods. Splay-fronted, with splay-fronted cupbaord recessed between the tiers. The upper tier decorated below a dentated cornice with a fieze of inlaid arabesque design, is supported at the rear-corners by a pair of tapering four-sided columns with scrolled capitals & and the front corners by columns in the form of draped female figures supporting capitals & resting on pentagonal bases with lion-masks in relief. The cupboard is inlaid on the frontal door with an urban architectural scene in perspective, showing a spire through a classical arch; on the ends with smaller architectural scenes; & on the front corners with vertical designs of scollwork. On the floor of the lower tier, between the five sides of the cupboard & the edge moulding are inlaid arabesque designs.'

'Extensive traces of worm; small portions of the bases of the front columns eaten away by worm. Chipped & rubbed.'

Object history | Given by E[ric].Bullivant, Mortimer House, Egerton Gardens, SW3 - apparently a collector who gave a wide range of objects to the Museum. Described in a memo of 1937 as the "top half of a buffet (lower half missing)...about 1600...English (or less probably French)". It was noted that in the event of acceptance the donor "would wish this gift to be conditional on exhibition of the buffet in this Museum, ie not at BGM or in the provinces". [no other information about this object on the file, MA/1/B3373 Object sampling carried out by Jo Darrah, V&A Science; drawer/slide reference 1/20. |
