Features boldly hatched in brown and sanguine with red in the lips and in the corners of the eyes; on a warm creamy carnation ground; a thin white wash over the whole area of the oval, and a thicker white preparatory wash for the collar; hair in dark brown hatches with some black over a brown wash; cap in black and grey wash; a touch of pale blue in the ear-ring and the shading of the collar; a blue wash in the background; on vellum put down on a leaf from a table-book.

Presumably acquired from Cooper's estate by the Rosses, or perhaps by Priestman (see Rosse, Cat. No. 143) and perhaps in the Michael Rosse sale, 2 April 1723; eventually purchased by Edwin [Durning] Lawrence before 1862, and sold by him to the Museum for £525 in 1892.
