Object history
The painting shows the actor, Oscar Asche (1871-1936), in his most famous role, the robber chief, Abu Hasan, in the 'Musical Tale of the East', Chu Chin Chow. The musical, based on the tale of the Forty Thieves from the Arabian Nights, had a book by Asche and music by Frederic Norton. It opened at His Majesty's Theatre on 31 August 1916 and ran until 22 July 1921, a total of 2238 performances. Chu Chin Chow held the distinction of being the longest running show on the London stage until 1958 when it was exceeded by The Mousetrap.
