Knife

1699 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This knife has hinges where the blade joins the handle. The arrows on the dials have to be set to the right combination for the knife to be opened. The design of a piece of cutlery often says something about its purpose. Marks and inscriptions can offer further clues as to origin, date and perhaps even a personal story.

Some sets of cutlery were made as gifts or in commemoration of special events. Others were designed to be portable and were engraved with their owner's name. Some simply show the mark of the cutler who made or sold them. These marks were registered with the cutlers' companies or guilds that were established to control standards.
