Knitting Sheath

1740 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This knitting sheath is inscribed with the date 1740, the name 'Thomos Smith' and the initials 'EP'. It was therefore probably made by a man for a woman as a present or love token. This example has intricate carved decoration of a small head and abstract designs, and a turned end.

Knitters used sheaths to hold one needle and support the knitting while they knitted with the other needle. They could tuck the sheath into their waistband or tie it around their waist.
