Men and women wore tasselled caps like this one on festive occasions. A tapestry designed by the Spanish artist Goya shows a party of people on a picnic wearing similar headgear.
This hand-knitted silk cap has a pattern of chevrons and lozenges which tapers towards the crown. It is finished off with a long tassel made from tufted silk rings threaded onto skeins of silk.
