2. PHOTOGRAPH OF DOORWAY
Charles or Jane Clifford, 18673

The Spanish doorway, known as the Door of the Apostles because of the four large figures that decorate it, was built in 1488 by Diego Sánchez de Almazán. Its clear, linear, Gothic ornament appealed to the Museum's first curator, John Charles Robinson. He bought this photograph for the collection on one of his visits to Spain, probably directly from the photographers, Charles and Jane Clifford, who were based in Madrid.
