Black cats and windmills became popular symbols of Paris as a result of bohemian cabarets such as Le Chat Noir (The Black Cat), which were first immortalised in posters by artists working in France like Théophile Steinlen. Edward Penfield (1866-1925) uses these well-known motifs to advertise a contemporary publication.
