Zandra Rhodes graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1964, opening her first shop, The Fulham Road Clothes Shop, four years later. The textiles she uses are a fundamental part of Rhodes' designs. In 1968 she created a series of textiles whose motifs were taken from knitting and embroidery stitches, called 'Knitted Circle'. The motifs are seen here on this printed satin dress.

Physical description
Quilted satin dress. The pattern depicts the Zandra Rhodes' Knitted Circle print in three different colour satins.

Circular skirt in three different layers, first layer consisting of one circle, second layer comprising three, and third layer with nine circles.

This particular dress is Butterfly No 9 & 16/cat no Z1 as depicted in Rhodes' 1984 autobiography (1984). A photograph of the dress being modelled in a Clive Arrowsmith photograph appears on page 35
