Object history | Thomas Johnson was a furniture designer and wood-carver. He is mainly known for his numerous published designs of furniture and decorative objects, such as Twelve Gerandoles (1755) and two editions of A New Book of Ornaments (1760 and 1762). His One Hundred and Fifty New Designs (1761) is dedicated to the president of the Anti-gallican Association, a society which was against current French fashions. Johnson's designs include a variety of frame styles, chimney-pieces, girandoles, candlestands and clock-cases decorated with opulent Rococo, Chinoiserie and rustic motifs. |
