Carved mother of pearl relief depicting the Sudarium in a silver gilt mount, South Germany, 15th century
Physical description
Carved mother of pearl relief depicting the sudarium (the image of Christ's head on St Veronica's cloth) in a silver gilt mount. The sudarium is upheld by an angel with wings outspread. The face of Christ has long hair. There is no halo. The relief is thick and convex, the surface much worn. On the back of the silver gilt mount is engraved the Nativity. The Virgin kneels before the Child. On the right St. Joseph in a high cap. In the background the ox and ass in the stable. The frame has a twisted edge and two loops.
