David Cox 1783-1859 Rhyl Sands About 1854; signed Cox was one of the most popular watercolourist of his day. He frequently visited north Wales, where Rhyl was a popular resort on account of its wide beach and dry, bracing air. The critic John Ruskin said of Cox 'the accidental in his mode answers gracefully to the accidental part of nature herself'. Watercolour on paper Purchased 1930 Museum no. P.30-1930
Object history
Exhibited at the David Cox Exhibition at Birmingham in 1890, and at the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley in 1924.
