Object history
This pastel is one of a pair; a portrait of Sir Robert's wife, also dated 1669, is in the Huntington Museum, San Marino, California. Both pastels belonged to Sir John Tollemache, M.P. in 1857 and remained in the family of the Barons Tollemache of Peckforton Castle, Cheshire until 1953. They were sold at Christie's, 15 May 1953 (Lot 92) and subsequently entered the collection of Sir Bruce Ingram O.B.E., M.C.
Historical context
Sir Robert Worsley was the 3rd Bart. of Apuldercombe and M.P. for Newton 1666-76. See Dictionary of National Biography, Vol.8, 1908, p.522; Thieme-Becker, Kunsterlerlexikon, Vol.14, 1921, p.571, and compare also E. K. Waterhouse, ‘John Greenhill’, Old Master Drawings, XI, (1937), p.70.
