Provenance: by descent through the Monro family to Dr F. Jefferiss, the donor.

Historical significance: Edward Thomas Monro was the eldest son of Dr Thomas Monro, and the brother of the artist. The portrait shows him as an Oxford undergraduate. Sarah Cox was the daughter of Samuel Compton Cox, Treasurer of the Foundling Hospital; she married E. T. Monro in 1814. For other family portraits, see E. Williams P. 63-1986 and G.
