Historical context
The Duchess of Marlborough in 1764 was Lady Caroline Russell, daughter of the Duke of Bedford, she married George Spencer, 4th Duke of Marlborough in 1762, and died in 1811. A comparison of this miniature with two portraits of Lady Caroline Russell by Reynolds suggests that this is a plausible identification, but does not provide conclusive evidence for it.
