Object history
Henry Compton, the sitter, was a page-in-waiting to George III. He married Miss Mary Dacres, lady in charge of the Royal children, in 1777. Their daughter, Augusta Caroline, married Captain Thomas Baynes, R.N., in whose family this miniature has descended. A portrait of the sitter by J. Hoppner is E.536-1950, and a miniature of his wife by A. B. Lens is P.9-1950. For an album of drawings by the sitter see E.500-534-1950.
